Oil return tube
Pulled this out of a 74 motor last night. I can find these for 356 and 912 engines, but not for 911 motors. First for me... Anyone have any info on these oil return tubes like made by or years they were popular?

I had them on my 76 turbo bought in 1992. Real nice idea with the spring.
I know where one is, have to look for others. Bruce |

Sierra Madre sells them for the 356/912. But I'd never seen anything like this on a 911. Very fancy piece of engineering with the chromed piece and heavy aluminum machines tube. Unfortunately they didn't appear to work too well. I was trying to get a timeframe of when they might have been popular to put some dates around the story of this engine.

"Didn't work too well?" Are you referring to that specific item or the concept? I had a different version (installed with snap-rings to keep it expanded) that worked great on my 914-6 back in the day. Stopped the annoying leaks at minimal expense. I don't see why they wouldn't work now as well.

Yeah Steam... The clips are th standard replacement, collapsible oil return tubes for repairs in situ. However, these spring things are unique. Way way way over engineered. What I meant by them not working is the amount of leaky crap that was built up on them. Maybe just bad orings as they certainly weren't viton, but after seeing what the bottom of the motor and the tubes looked like before I cleaned them, I don't think they are any better than the simple clip kind that you describe.

The problem with this type of return tube (they've been around for years) is that the springs vibrate. This vibration transfers to the seals and greatly reduces life expectancy. They are kind of cool for an emergency replacement (maybe track side) but not a good choice given the plethora of options.

Any idea of the timeframe these would have been popular? I'm trying to estimate if this motor was last rebuilt in the '90s or '80s. LOL

I believe they were part of a line of Hopner Products from the 80s. Hopner was an engineering student and also Porsche enthusiast. He designed and marketed to a limited extent, tensioners (primarily) and other 911 products. Here is one of the Hopner tensioners. Innovative but they never really caught on. ![]()
