Oil pump doesn't spin freely?

I just purchased an early 911 oil pump, and the first thing I notice is that it doesn't spin freely. I can barely turn it if I use every ounce of strength in my fingers on the splined shaft. I don't recall the last 911 oil pump I worked on being so tight, and a quick search on the forum seems to indicate that the pump should spin more easily than this.

Should it spin more freely?

Thanks.

Scott

If it is pickled in gear oil, it won't spin easy at all. If it is flushed with a clean solvent and still does not spin without a lot of force, an autopsy might be in order.

Always worth opening it up to see what you really have and give it a good cleaning. Could be oil or pickled in preservative oil.

Thanks l, guys. On a related point, I tried to open the pump but found it surprisingly difficult to pull it apart. I didn't want to force it so I stopped. I don't recall having this much trouble with the last one I opened. Any suggestions on good ways to open it up?

Thanks, I can trying warming it a bit. Is it OK to tap on the alignment pins with a roll pin punch and hammer? Or should it just pull apart with my hands?

Just tap the pins out using a pin punch. The pump should not be difficult to turn nor should it bind during rotation. There's some good advice here for reconditioning these pumps. Search this forum for oil pump and I think you should find a post by Scott Kinder.

Is there anyone in the LA area who you would recommend to open up and inspect a 930 oil pump. Not sure I want to risk damaging it with my limited disassembly skills.
