Hi,all these smart pelicaners.Anyone cleaned with ultrasonic for CIS INJECtion with good results.I am a retired factory trained Porsche mechanic with 40 years experiance who retired 12 years ago and would like to know what you know. Maybe the smart guys do not want to share.I have rebuilt over 3,000 911 engines. I will share if you will. One of my customers had ultrasonic that I used to clean Webers,Zeniths, toughest to clean and work well. Thanks Fred

What is your question? With 3000 builds perhaps you could share? I didnt know 3000 porsche engines have been rebuilt in the entire world, let alone Costa Rica?

Yes. Works well. use needlenose to slightly pull plunger. Use small strand copper wire to hold open plunger then clean in ultrasonic bath. Amazing how much crud comes out of injectors. I use an ultrasonic to clean MFI and EFI injectors.

Faapgar,

You could be a very good mechanic but your creditability is highly suspect. You could not possibly rebuilt 3000 engines in your lifetime even if you started rebuilding engines at 10 years old. Here are my calculations:

12 motors per year..........................will take 250 years to do 3000 units.
24 motors per year..........................will take 125 years to do 3000 units.
48 motors per year..........................will take 63 years to do 3000 units.

1 motor every week.........................will take 58 years to do 3000 units.

Even if you were working for MM, your claim to fame is mathematically improbable. So what's your secret you would like to share with the "smart people of this forum"?

Tony

Easy guys ... Fred ran an auto repair shop specializing in Porsche for many years in NJ and later PA. I can't speak to the number of engines he built, but maybe we can focus the thread on the question rather than numbers?

Here's an IMSA 911 that Fred built and raced in the 1980s that is with me now.

Thanks for chiming in Stownsen. (Pretty cool looking race car too...)
I looked at this thread thinking that the OP was a little unfamiliar with using a computer and was having some difficulty putting what he really intended in type.
As a lead mechanic in a large shop (or an owner), it is possible that he had his hands in on many overhauls.
Looking forward to see what he has to offer the forum.

I agree, give Fred a break and let's see. And I see Pennsylvania in that post too. Likely Fred retired to Costa Rica to enjoy all of the beautiful women there.

history

Hi,I apologize as I was a little frustrated at a few hundred looks and not one response. It should have read over 3,000 engines repaired and that could be a little low.I received my factory training in Orangeburg,N.Y. the local facility for the tri-state area in the early 70,s.I worked at Bernardsville N.J. called Gardner Motors.First shop with Peter Dawe in Chester N.J.He went on to work at Andial and I went to be shop foreman at Herman & Miller in Parsippany N.J.They bought a new 934 Turbo # 36 for the 76 IMSA season.Milt Minter co-drove for Watkins Glen and was very quick and a nice guy.I was crew chief for the car and it was a great thrill.I worked 4 days a week at the dealer and 3 days a week getting the new shop going. Finally went full time and worked 70 hours a week doing mainly engine and trans work.Averaged about 10+ motors a month plus gearboxes.I had a number of shops in the tri-state area bring me their motor, trans as I was set up for a quick turn around. They remove the driveline and bring me a long block on monday and I would a valve job, reseal and they could pick up on Wed.I stocked sets of heads for all 911 except Turbo on the shelf ready to go.I worked 7 days a week, had low overhead, spent less than I made and retired early.I learned how to make good H.P.out of a great design. So to the post. What works best for chemicals to clean CIS components? Thanks Fred

My method (to expand on the above).

remove CIS injectors
pull pintle pin and secure with wire
place in plastic (polyethylene) container (used sandwich meat containers work really well)
submerge with acetone and cover but do not seal
place in ultrasonic bath
sonicate until solvent is thoroughly dirty
decant solvent
replace with clean solvent
repeat as many times as necessary until solvent is clean.
reinstall into car.

I usually do not sonicate the fuel head. I remove the plunger and then submerge in a gallon can of Berrymans B12 Chemtool. remove and blow out each oriface with compressed air. generally lots of crud comes out.

This takes care of most of the issues once the mixture is reset.

cleaning

Hi,thanks for your input. When I went to Porsche school we were encouraged to keep in touch with our classmates from different dealers to share problems and ideas as no one person knows it all. What is your apprehension about sonicating the fuel head? How long do you let it sit in the Berryman,s solution?I just came back to C.R. from Pa.a few days ago.I had no replies to my post so I submersed one fuel head in a bucket of ATF until I return in April to hopefully soften the varnish.I like your suggestion for the acetone. On the fuel head do you remove the cap screw with spring and shims before soaking? Thanks Fred

Interesting that you mention using Acetone - I was going to buy 5litres last week to thoroughly clean out my intercooler; I heard that it's a good solvent to use for cutting through oil but not so harsh as to damage anything else.....is that the case with the fuel head components? I.e., strong enough to dissolve varnished fuel but not so aggressive that it removes the exterior factory plating? (as it happens, no cleaning necessary on the intake components, all bone dry upon inspection this weekend, so I didn't order any)

Never heard the word "sonicate" before - my new favourite word...my challenge-to-self is to somehow wangle that into a sentence this week...no mean feat when discussing IT, but we'll give it a go
