2.2 options

a lot of this has been covered, but...
I have the original engine for my 71 t, it dropped a valve and was replaced about 10 years ago. i am now thinking about rebuilding with a little more power.
options I have read are,

keeping the bottom end and getting more compression/ cc's for pistons cylinders

replacing crank and rods with 2.4/2.7 units, keeping t pistons/cylinders(upgrade to e spec)

heads would have to be opened in any respect.

would like to keep machining to minimum, and durability, and fun to maximum.

final motor will have weber/pmo 40's

Why your reluctance for machine work? If you're looking to upgrade the 2.2 on a budget, you will certainly be better off taking Mr. Black's advice. Provided your case wasn't worked over 10 years ago, the mag case issues will have to be addressed: head and web studs time serted, spigots and case halves decked, align bored, oil bypass mod. Some of that stuff has to be done to successfully rejoin the case halves. Throw in new P/C's, 70.4mm crank and head work and you'll find it may indeed be cheaper to upgrade to a newer motor and mothball the numbers matching engine. You are fortunate enough to be able to save on shipping the case as you are just down the road from several premier air cooled machine shops.

Good luck and keep us posted!

hi compression 2.4 / 2.7 with Mod Solex (DC30) cam and MFI is a fun engine in a light car. Retains all the character of the car that I think would be missing with a newer motor.
