Cam Thrust Plate Float?
I'm having difficulty with some language in the "How to Rebuild and Modify Porsche 911 Engines book. On page 157, upper left, there is a reference to "Camshaft Thrust Plate" float. I understand what's being discussed, i.e. the cam centered in the hole in the chain case, but what is "camshaft thrust plate" referring to? The closest thing I find to that in the parts diagram is called merely a "thrust washer," and even in the list of parts given in the book there is no reference to an item by that name. Clarification would be appreciated.

Not having the book, I would consider the washer as a thrust washer (plate)

The thrust plate is the thick washer of the shim pack. It's one of the two below explanations, I now think it's #2
1/ It's telling you that the ID of the thrust washer can be no more than .5mm larger than the OD of the camshaft. 2/ But then I just went and looked at a chainbox and thrust plate and it also could mean the clearance of the OD of the thrust plate and any point of the ID of the camshaft cover plate....since it's talking about centering the chain box this one might be correct. I too had to read it a few times. ![]()

I believe this area, you don't want the thrust washer touching the cover plate at any point.

Very good, guys. I was just trying to confirm what parts I needed to be looking at. Possibly an issue for me since the case was line bored.
