I ordered the better tip that heats faster. I'll have that on Wednesday and we'll see what happens.

Matt,

I am doing my 15th engine rebuild and had encountered stubborn cylinder head studs maybe 3 times only. I usually do it without heat and could get them out around 30 mins. But with a stubborn stud, additional heat is needed. Apply heat for 10 to 15 mins. on the spigot using a MAP to melt the bond between the stud and the crankcase. If my memory serves me right, I have removed more than 150 Dilavars head studs. About 4 dozens or so Dilavars studs are saved in my garage.

Using a Snap-ON stud remover and a strong impact wrench are my primary tools which I learned from Tom Butler.

This . I had one I had to heat for 15 minutes with my map gas . I gave up on pipe wrench and got a set of vice grips on the stud. the stud actually began to twist at one point but she finally let go and was miserable all the way till the end . What a satisfying feeling getting that last bugger out.

I slid a nut over the stud till about 2 inches above the case and mig welded it from both sides. heated the case 15 minutes with the torch. (use plain steel nut). Put a ring spanner and an 1.5 foot breaker bar on it. On the ones broken off just above the case I put a washer onto it to protect the case and mig welded also a steel nut on it. Heated the case again for 15 min. All 24 studs came out including the 7 broken dilivar studs. When I delivered my parts to the machine shop the owner said to me " We put the case in an oven and take them out for free as we hate solving client mishaps" Still very satisfying to have done it myself.

You need to add thread penetrant into the above equation (same as for removing exhaust system fasteners) It helps dissolve any metal corrosion and reduces friction between the threads. I use Kroil, but other brands are better than nada.

I've been hitting it with PB Blaster.

Yesterday I received the recommended torch for my map gas canister. The flame is much bigger than my other torch. So hopefully I'll get to try it tonight.

Maybe about 5-8 minutes.

Thanks for recommending this torch. It's my new favorite tool. I was having trouble removing the pulley bolt. My 1/2" electric dewalt wasn't breaking it free. And that thing is powerful.

I soaked in PB blaster overnight. Hit it with the torch today for a few minutes. And I spun it right off.

Ready to split the case. [emoji53]

Glad it worked out for you. It's great for lighting cigars too!

Whoa. Cool.
