3 bolt intermediate shaft gear

hi, I'm swapping the aluminum timing gear for a 964 steel gear in my sandcast case. I have the original intermediate shaft but it is a 3 bolt / 3 pin type. can i drill and tap the pin holes for the other 3 bolts? what are the bolt sizes? I've already installed the matching 964 crank gear.
thanks!

No sir. The offset on the gear is different.

Walt at Competition engineering can modify your case to for bearings so you can install the complete 964 intermediate shaft in your early case.

crap. i just finished switching the gears. i really felt productive today. I really wonder what made the engineer at porsche wake up one day and decide to change the offset by 3mm. was this a change when the gear went from the 3 bolt/3 pin to the 6 bolt? or was it a change from the 964 steel gear?

thanks Henry.

The offset change when they redesigned the shaft from plate thrust to thrust bearing.
The early shaft used the intermediate shaft cover (steel) and shims to adjust the shaft end-play/ thrust. The shaft also ran in the case with no bearings.
The first mag cases got a thrust bearing to control the intermediate shaft end-play.
The redesign happened at that point.
The 911 and 964 inter-shafts are interchangeable.
I hope that made sense.
