What parts on a 996 GT3 can be used for air cooled motors
I'm noticing that some engine builders are using GT3 cranks, GT3 tit. rods, oil pumps for air cooled race motors. I also read that a 996 case can be modified for an air cooled engine by removing the oil return tube plugs along with other modification.
My question with respect to the case is what other modifications are necessary and whether it is cost effective? Also, besides crank, rods, oil pumps what other parts from an early GT3 engine can be used for an air cooled motor build? For instance, can intermediate shaft or cylinders be used? other parts? I'm assuming that heads and pistons probably can't be used for an air cooled motor. Last edited by MST0118; 06-04-2016 at 01:57 PM.. Reason: compl |

What you mentioned is just about it, with some modifications, cheers.

Pete v. B. put a whole GT3 engine in his formerly 912 hot rod. Also lengthened the wheelbase and a few other things.

Thanks Flieger. I'd be interested to see that modified 912 with the GT3 engine.

I'm rebuilding my '87 Carrera 3.2L and am using only 997 GT3 parts internally:
997 GT3 crank 997 GT3 Pankl titanium rods 997 GT3 oil pump 997 GT3 intermediate shaft Also I'm using a 997 GT3 4.0L exhaust The early 996 GT3's were using 964 crank cases with the oil return holes plugged. In theory you can use a 997 GT3 case and drill holes for the oil return tubes. The cylinder bolts have the same spacing on 996/997 GT3's as for the 964/993 cases, so in theory the air cooled cylinders and heads should fit on a GT3 case. Building an air cooled "GT3" (using my matching numbers 930 case and G50 gear box) is my goal. I'm also using GT3 gears, LSD, single mass LWF and clutch for my build. |

OMG! That is an awesome build. I hope I am fortunate enough to see that car on the road one day as I too and in the Bay Area.

My understanding, which seems to match the pictures I have seen, is that the "cradle" for the air-cooled engine fan is missing on the 997 engine. Also, the cam drive is completely different, and the oil tensioner holes don't match up. Finally, there are no pulleys to drive the air cooled fan, and the GT3 crank snout is a different diameter or has a different key way or something.

Thanks for those details on case. Sounds like a lot of machine work needed for a 997 case to make it work so best option is to find an air cooled 964 type case followed by early 996 gt3 case with plugged oil return tubes.
