Biral Cylinders question
 

I need to change the cylinders on my 911 1971.
I found this 84mm Porsche 911 2.2/2.4 Engine Biral Cylinder Set on AA Performance website:

Does anybody can tell me if it is an acceptable quality for a car to be driven less than 5000 miles per year and no track racing?

Do a search of this forum, this question has come up many times before.

In theory those are nice cylinders. I would want to know if they have been honed or bored over size. I can't imagine they are stock size and in spec.

Once you have a machinist figure out if the cylinders are in spec the next step is finding some matching pistons.

You might want to shop around.

There is a guy in the UK who seems to have experienced issues but he bought Barrels and JE Pistons as a set.

The clearances were apparently poor.

When he published numbers the barrel diameters at 84mm looked bang on but piston ring gaps were horrid.

They barrels/pistons arrived assembled and no-one took them apart and made any checks before building the motor.

I have seen the barrels and they look OK.

I've only used the iron cylinders for the type 4 builds, they seem to be OK quality, but about 15,000km is all I have on a set, so long term value is still unknown.

I won't use AA pistons or the grant rings they sell, I use Hastings (96mm, KB pistons) or Deves rings for stock sizes.

If you buy them, measure them for bore size, ovality and taper. Also check the cylinder heights. The one set I used had one cylinder that was too high and had to be machined to match the other five.
