Timing Chain Rails
 

Finally getting to putting cams back in on 100k service for 1995 993. Did not clean parts as I disassembled (shame on me) all rails have noticeable wear pattern from end plates on chains, is this problem? driver side long rail has 2 slices in it that look like they came with part, but cannot tell if they are there on pix of new parts at Pelican website, passenger side long rail has badly chipped edges. Apologize for poor pix, but hope they convey the story.
Should I buy all new rails? Thanks

I say, yes. it will chip further and get into your engine, not a good thing.

New rails? No brainer. Cheap insurance. Might want to check your sprockets, and idler arms for wear. Oh wait, do 993s have those?

Are you going to check your cam sprocket alignment?

Hell yes you should install new chain rails!

964 and 993 3.6 engines don't have the same type of idler sprocket and tensioner setup as the 3.2 and older engines. Here's what the chain tensioning and ramps look like and you can see the 3.6 chains ride on the ramps much more than the older engines.

Thanks, next question is whether i need long handled cam holding tool from Pelican site or the Stomski cam sprocket bolt version...

Yes, you do either one will work. Just do not get the one from ebay or you will have to grind it down to make it work properly. Ask me how I know :eek: but sure was cheap, key word cheap no fit cheap.

Now, do you need the beautiful Stomski 19MM socket guide, No, just use paper towels, roll the paper on socket and fill the gap to keep it centered, not as purty but it works.

I converted my 993 cams to work with the old style sprockets. ;)

Got the Stomski tool and it seems very nice, but my cam sprockets are not the 4 hole style, :(
Will have to call them tomorrow to see what my options are, my engine is early 95 (really 94), maybe cam sprockets are same as 964???

I used the sprocket holding tool that I bought from Pelican.. like a few others that have mentioned, one of the pins which are D-sectioned, was not aligned correctly and I had to file it down a little to get all 3 pins into the sprocket.

But it still worked well.

Thanks to Steve Stomski for swapping the 993 tool I bought for the 964 tool I needed, :)))

Suggested changing timing chains themselves, cannot find timng chains with master link for our engine, do they exist?
