Hypoid Gear Oil in Motor mistake
Im looking for a consensus if one was to accidentally use Hypoid Gear Oil to top up a 3.4 motor would it do damage? were talking about one litre (1/4 galllon)
the engine pressure SEEMS to be the same and the oil needle still fluctuates with revs. Is it safe to continue driving or should i drain and refill the lot? engine viscosity i had in i think was about 10W 40 The Hypoid oil is 80W 90 |

Hypothetically, of course. Someone you know knows someone who might have done that...
If I were in your shoes I'd do a full oil change right now. Don't know how those additives might react in the engine. At the end of the day, motor oil was designed to lubricate engines and gear oil for gears. Using gear oil in an engine is only going to be worse. Diluting it probably means no lasting damage but I'd rather change it to make sure.

It has EP additives that would not be beneficial to most rod and main bearings. Maybe nothing will happen but why chance it? I'd drain it and use it in your lawn mower etc.

oil is cheap, fixing engines is expensive. simple math to me.

I once did that on purpose. I had a 924S that had been over heated when a coolant hose popped. It had low oil pressure and bottom end was on the way out. I added a quart of Swepco and drove it like that for a year. But I wouldn't recommend it on an otherwise healthy engine.

If it is GL5 oil (most common) it does have additives that can do damage to brass bearing parts. But strangely enough I have read that 75w-90 oil (at least synthetic) is actually very close in viscosity to 10w-40 which surprised the hell out of me. Either way I would change the oil.

Why would it be a good idea to leave it in. Don't be lazy (hypothetically), ask yourself the right questions.
