Part throttle / cold performance expectations (motronic)

This summer I picked up an '89 325i that runs a not so dissimilar motronic as my '87 Carrera and I'm stunned at how much smoother it is cold and at part throttle. I'm not necessarily complaining about the 911, I like its gnarleyness but wondering if this is

a) to be expected
b) cured by the various chips on the market

I did a top end +++ on the 911 including fuel injector cleaning/calibrating, all motronic sensors, plugs, cap, rotor, fuel lines and filter valve adjustment etc - basically saying I believe I have it running as well as it did when it left the factory but I wanna check...
