Oil Pump question? And rod bolts?

I'm rebuilding the engine on my '72 2.4T and when I started to install the oil pump, I noticed that the seal around the suction tube is chipping off. Can I clean it "all" off or fix it, how? Is it an o-ring or sealent, hard to tell? Here's a pic:


One more thing. I've heard conflicting stories about replacing rod bolts. The guy at the machine shop that seems to know a lot about stretch and torque and tightening say, "don't need to replace". Some on this forum say to replace. Mine are the 12.9 stamped bolts.

The oil pump has an epoxy seal around the scavenge intake, that's what breaking down.

I think that response sent me in the right direction. I got a sealer and redid the seal. I think it will be just fine.

Stupid question: is that the original "3 rib" pump? Did you have the case machined? Oil bypass done?

Porsche Rod bolts should not be reused. They do stretch during torquing. And, because the coefficient of friction can vary a lot, you don't know how much the bolts actually stretched. Crap shoot to reuse.

ARP and raceware bolts can be reused, as long as you follow thier instructions.

Rod bolts are the highest stressed parts in an engine. They are not that expensive. And a failed rod bolt will destroy the engine. it is not worth the risk.

I cleaned the brittle epoxy from mine and JB welded that seal.

Not sure about the 3 rib pumps. I kn ow the newer ones are slightly larger on one side of the pump. scavenge/output. I did the oil bypass mod on an engine a while back that went in a track car but not this one.

Yup, I ordered new rod bolts and nuts this morning. I wouldn't feel comfortable not doing so. Peace of mind and logic won out. Porsche guys won over machine shop guys.
