Play in crankshaft pulley normal?
Hi, I'm finally putting back together all the things that came off the engine. I'll update the build thread shortly, but I need some help to be able to move on:
Upon installing the crankshaft pulley in the rear of the engine, I noticed that there is some axial play (maybe 3-5°) with everything seated properly. When I tightened the bolt, the pulley turns and it's now aligned with TDC 1 and 4 as it should be (ZE mark on case partition line). I'm still left wondering if it's the way it's supposed to be, or is the stud on my pulley too small for the locating hole in the crank? I can't believe factory would leave it up to this to align crank and pulley and I didn't see anything about this in Wayne's book. Any thoughts welcome!! Dario

You do have the locating pin in the pulley, Oui? The slop will be there until torqued.
How is the snout's pin receiver, is it out of round or perfectly round? Post a pic if you have it. Also what did you torque the bolt to? Sorry for all the questions.

Oui, oui, ze locating pin iz in ze pulley, it just seems to be a bit "loose" in the locating hole (hence the slop). The pulley and crankshaft surfaces mate nicely, but I haven't checked for roundness. I torqued the pulley to the value in Wayne's book (80 Nm for non-A/C engines).

Pictures
I took off the pulley again to take a picture of the back and its location on the crankshaft. I also measured the play: it's 1.5mm or so, which comes out to about 1°-maybe not so important? Still, I would have thought that tolerances would be much tighter.

You will be fine. As long as the TDC lines up and Pistons on #1 & #4 are fully up.
Consider getting the 993 Diamond Coated Pully Washer, it will insure the pulley will NEVER slip if torque properly. You may need to open the pin hole a little. It is hard to tell but the pin receiver does seem larger, it could be the PO did not tighten properly and the hole got rounded out??? You are lucky, my pulley got loose and mushroomed my pin hole.

Wow, yes, I see! Your pin hole does look in bad shape compared to mine. Maybe something similar happened here in the past. I do like your garage floor, though
![]() Thanks for the heads up on the 993 washer, I didn't even know this existed! diamond coated, no less. What wouldn't be good enough for our little cars... It will be on the next order going out. Thanks for your help, Dario

Most Welcome Brother Dario!
You can also use a wooden dowel, I would not use anything sharp or metal on the pistons or for that matter on the cylinder walls. Thanks, that is actually my living room floor, wife was not too happy but she wanted me to be happy ![]() Quote:
