3.0L Main Seal Depth & Installation

Hello Gents,

On a 3.0L engine:

1. What is the recommended seal depth for the pulley seal? Flush or some distance over/under?

2. What is the recommended seal depth for the flywheel seal?

3. Any tips on how to get the flywheel seal started without buggering it up? Based on the case sealant thread I am trying to install it dry so there is no risk of it walking itself out down the road, but I could be wrong on that.

Thanks in advance.

Hello Jose:

I am no expert, but when I built my last 3.0L the pulley seal sat outside of the Number 8 bearing a small amount. I would say about 1/32 inch.
Now, the flywheel seal was put on before I sealed the case half together. In other words, before I put the left case half onto the right case half, the seal was already on the crankshaft.
The crankshaft flywheel seal sits inside almost 1/4 inch. So, I can say the seal is flush with the case but the crankshaft shows some steel protruding.

Hope this helps. If you send me your Email, I can send you some pictures of what it looks like on my engine.

Thanks Ed. I would appreciate those for reference.

Also, I ended up installing the flywheel seal by putting it in the freezer for a few hours, adding a smear of engine oil to the crank surface, and leaving the case surface (and seal OD) dry. Seal went on with firm hand pressure, about half depth. Then drove the rest of the depth in gently with a wooden dowel and a hammer until it was flush. Was able to do this with the engine still on the stand.
