Do you have a log of the dyno session? I would love to look that over for you and see if there is anything that stands out from the data.

Nippy,
I would not panic(yet). You should do a leakdown, as a compression test doesn't provide much info... learn where the leak is coming from w the leakdown; intake valves, leaking past the rings which you'll hear through the crankcase breather or oil tank filler down stream, exhaust valves- exhaust. About 10% compression difference is not terminal alone. If the sealing is still pretty good, you may be able to fix the electronic problem(which is real as I endorsed early on) and not need to fix a mechanical woe.
As I cautioned on page 2, one do a lot of damage just driving an ill motor... If the timing is moving all over as pwr curves demonstrate, it is equally likely to be advancing a whole bunch as retarding . This can break rings, ring lands in the pistons- fast, and later a host of other things if loaded for a long time w excess heat buildup. Though one doesn't really get that long of wide open throttle pulls on the street .

Anyhow some folks here w AEM experience offered some wisely directed assistance and hopefully you took advantage of their offers, or can if your engine is not terminal.

Further I would call AEM here in Calif (Torrance I think) and ask for an authorized dealer for their products in the Southeast, particularly one Porsche specialty. I've seen folks struggle w AEM even after taking a week of AEM training over their on their ECU's and not really be able get things sorted on their projects, even with their technical support assistance. Granted this was 3-4 years ago. That's just one of many many reasons why we are an authorized Motec dealer and have only used their ECUs the last 10 years or so.

I can suggest some good shops in that neck of the woods but I am uncertain if any know or have hands-on experience w AEM products. You can PM me if you need further assistance or have any questions. Good luck.

Kevin is providing some good advice. I've provided a link below to the AEM "find a dealer" app. You can locate the AEM dealer, with factory trained techs, nearest your location.

I'm blaming the AEM EPM.

Go to a dedicated 36-1 or 60-2 trigger.

jpnovak 03-08-2018 09:42 AM

Sorry to hear of this issue. I agree. Use the borescope to check for cylinder scoring as evidence by broken rings. I would pull a rocker and verify the the valve guides are good.

Did your tuner verify timing with a strobe timing light? This would be item number one on the list for EFI ignition setups. You have to make sure the trigger offset, hysteresis, timing latency and other parameters are set correctly.

Simple way is to set the fixed timing map to 10deg everywhere and turn off all the timing corrections for MAP, temp, etc. Then verify if you have 10deg timing on the crank pulley marks. revving the engine the timing should never change.

Was your tuner using a load or eddy current dyno? It should have been quickly evident that there was an issue just in the fuel and ignition maps.

Still having fun with the car, going to dig in and build a motor after festival of speed....

Even 190HP is fun.............

This is my buddies 3.8 build. Motec, 50MM PMO ITBS, GT3 muffler going in a absolutely gutted 964 with new Coil over system. The car should be done in time for (excuse my spelling here) Luftekult...

There's a reason they call detonation "the silent killer" ya know........

Made it to Sebring and back. About 2 hours each way from my house. Talked to my engine builder there. He even says it sounds good. We had a blast! The Festival of Speed is in St Pete this weekend, 5 minutes from home. After that, engine will be torn down.

I got something to keep me busy over the hot summer while the motor and tranny are being built....That does have a true 300HP.

Ah ha. Where is she headed

nippy 04-19-2018 11:38 AM

Mr Mike Bruns has the motor and tranny

Echo Safe's input on the fuel pump, fuel pressure situation. No a:f curve on the Dyno or in the cabin? Flying without an altimeter. I have one in every standalone car for safety. A gauge is much cheaper than an engine.

Chris, here’s the volumes and the C/R, the engine and machine work so far look very good, the quality of workmanship is good, I will get the bottom end apart and finish the inspection this week. Do you know who built this ? The cams are stamped DC 40,
John’s grind.

I hope his motor gets figured out, I will help any way I can. William Knight

If anybody can sort it out - Mike Bruns can.... glad you got the engine to him Chris - he'll take good care of you.

I also have heard the AEM EPM is unsteady, including Rasant who came up with a solution. Just installed a Rasant 60-2 trigger with Motec hall sensors the other day. Really outstanding bit of kit with the cam sensor housed inside the distributor canister.
