Salvage titles mean different things in different states. I bought a 'salvage' 944 chasis in NY for a track car that was a stripped theft recovery. I re-titled it in NY, then when I brought it to NJ, NJ issued me a clean title!
Everyone makes mistakes, and I could believe it was a Carfax error, but I would expect the seller to clear this up if he wants to make a sale.
I wouldn't buy a car with a salvage title unless I had documentation explaining why.
You may also want to check with your insurance company. They may have an issue paying out on a car that was already 'salvaged'
