But the chip is probably what makes the difference there. I suspect the really old ECUs are too "stupid" to understand there's been a change to the system and keep on going as if the cat and old exhaust were still attached... Whereas The newer relearn and adapt to the changes to the system (which can be achieved using a chip instead as in your case)...
