At least in Michigan, the new title would say a '2016 replica'. Yes, I know of several who bought old titles (historical documents) then stamped those VIN's into frames (with fiberglass bodies on top); some got caught and the cars were confiscated. Boyd Coddington was charged with titling new steel bodied cars with original Ford titles and VIN's, big scandal!
Cutting out and transferring a VIN marked section is really sketchy in the eyes of the law, doubt if you could do it unless you used a MAJOR percentage of the original.
