I'm 57 years young and can't for the life of me ever remember any r12 cans with anything but the male threaded end which would be connected to the yellow hose on the a/c manifold set or directly to the low pressure, male threaded, side of the compressor.
If you piped it directly into the compressor from the can with the hose that came as a kit, without a manifold set, you had no idea what the high side pressure is, taking a big chance on running the pressure too high.
I've worked on a bunch of old a/c when r12 was $1 a can and never saw any r12 systems with a schraeder valve on the high or low side.
