There are several ways to do things. JW and Duane have given you good examples. I had Bilstein inserts in my '78 SC and this was what I used:



For the Bilstein insert removal, I used an old Bilstein gland and made a positive version to remove and install the gland with the help of a spanner.



Don't worry about using a big channel lock plier or a pipe wrench. Wrap some masking tape on the gland to minimize the abrasions if that is your concern or find the appropriate tool.
