yes the wrx engine is watercooled, subaru bought the patent from vw to eliminate initial development, vw produced liquid cooled flat 4's as well (waterboxer)
subaru has made a lot of advancement with the design since aquiring it.
no doubt GM looked at the vw engine while developing the corvair, but it was a design of their own development.
