If it is a 92 - it uses r12. If your compressor clicks on, belt spins, and AC light is on while the air that comes out is pretty much the same as with the ac off - you need more refrigerant. I had heard many horror stories that my cousin told me about his friends have $$$$ problems with their e36 AC. Turns out I just needed some more r12 - cost me $50 to have it professionally filled. And now i'm living in the cool lane.
To verify what AC type u have, just open the hood and look to the sticker on the frame below the washer fluid. You'll see r-12 most likely (i also have a 92). Good luck
