I would agree here: you need a long stroke crank. Back when I was doing such things the best two auto x engines I had were RS piston 40 IDA/E cam and JE 9.5/1 40 IDA S cam varieties. The grunt in slow corners as posters have noted but also the grunt in 2nd gear -- as shifting costs time. Area under the curve is more important than anything else. Long stroke and more displacement are the answers. My 2c. Maybe worth less!
