FG panels need to be MUCH thicker than corresponding steel due to the fact that steel is MUCH stiffer than FG. The tensile strengh of FG is also about one half that of steel. If done correctly FG panels can be about half the weight of corresponding steel.
Early Corvettes weighted as much or more than a steel bodied car would have due to the required thickness of the FG.
