BMW Roundel rear brakes

Has anyone had to replace rear brakes on and E46 yet?

I pulled the worn out rotor and pads already, but have not replaced them yet.

I'm wondering if anyone knows of better and possibly less expensive than OEM parts that are available for this platform.

I was looking into EBC, but could not find rear rotors.

Ok, first off, I wouldnt settle for anything less than OEM parts. But thats just me.

Have you checked our prices on parts? We here at Pelican strive to have the best tech advice and customer service possible along with the lowest prices. (sorry for the shameless plug, lol)

Are you replacing the rotors at the same time as the brake pads?

I dont hate them, I just think they are pointless on anything less than a track car. Plus they crack over time.

Thumbs up To sport Drill or not

Still have no cracks on the RX7............(2 months)

They handle nice and give the car a whole new look and a nice one at that!

To each his own!

cross drilled on the BMW are for looks only. And they do crack.

I don't agree that OEM is always the way to go.

It depends GREATLY on your driving habits and desire to keep wheels clean.

Im still of the mindset that ventilated and slotted are the way to go. I think that cross-drilling seriously compromises the strength of the rotors.

But aren't the solid OEM rotors prone to warping?

I've read that the OEM solid rotors tend to warp early, but that BMW couldn't use drilled or slotted rotors in the US market due to liability issues stemming from cracked rotors.

M Logo X-DRILLED

I'll be putting some X-drilled and slotted rotors on my M3 in 2-3 months. I will see what is to become..........

I have replaced the rotors/pads before on my '99 323i. The process is fairly easy, and I'd recommend the OEM parts for normal daily driving. When you can get the OEM pads for $40-60, I'm not sure you're saving much by going with the aftermarket, cheaper (in price) pads. I cannot speak to the aftermarket performance pads, other than I've heard some tend to wear the rotors more (especially the "dust-free" pads).

Pelican Parts Brakes

Dust free pads are typically made from a harder material thus giving you a longer life. The simple logic here is you ware down the rotors faster, like I mentioned before if you have paid good money for high performance rotors then buy softer pads to make them last longer. "You cannot turn cross-drilled and or slotted rotors".
