This is my first visit and use of the board...so, here goes!
I am using my new M3 for drivers' ed. Guys at the track say the A-pillar is guite weak on this car. Since I'm so darn old and safety conscious, I am wondering if a roll bar/cage is appropo. That would also facilitate installing a 5 or 6 point harness. HERE'S MY ?s. Are there prefab, bolt-ons out there? Do they mess up the car's utility or funtionality as a daily driver re back seat, or just "tearup" what is such a beautiful interior? How about any experience with one's friendly dealer re warranty,if they see such evidence of track use? The Feb. issue of Roundel says AC Schnitzer is coming out with a bolt-in cage. Anyone got any info or experience on that?

Usually, when you install a roll cage, you lose a great deal of accessibility inside your car. You almost always will also have to either cut or remove various trim pieces inside the car to secure it. Another issue is how the cage is attached to the car. Personally i would be more comfortable with a cage that has been welded to the car rather than bolted. This requires you to remove all carpet, trim, etc.. to prevent any fires during welding. Either way, you are looking a a lot of work to get it in there.

I was affraid this was going to be the answer. I do plan on contacting Schnitzer; I'll let you know,if they have anything of interest. I'll just have to keep the sunny side up! THANKS

Are you looking to re-inforce the chassis and reduce flex? Or, are you trying to prevent the car from crushing in during a roll-over? Yo may have a couple of options here depending on what you are trying to do.

Roll-over,safety focus primary aim, i.e., I'd like to protect from any roof collaspe. I'd also like to be more firmly secured in a 5 point harness for safety as well. Secondarily, I'd like to be more tightly held in the seat for better driving comfort/posture. I did look into the 4 point Schroth system designed for the BMW, but several people say that could be very problematic-- if the roof ever did fold.

I would probably focus more on stiffening the body and suspension before i go full out and put a cage in the car.
