1999 328i won't crank

My 99 328i won't start (won't even crank, makes only one click) until I connect additional booster battery (portable) to the front terminals. I first thought my battery was dead, so I bought a new one and it still does the same thing... Just one click and no crank. The car is getting power to everything, but will not crank unless I do what's descrbide above. Any ideas?????

Also my charging (batter) light comes on intermittently while the engine is running. It comes on and off.

Please, any ideas would help tremendously.

Where did you get the new battery?

Did you make sure that the cables were on there tight?

Got it at Walmart (brand new - should work fine) and yes, the new battery is attached very tightly. Can you think why it would need a boost up front? Also, my booster isn't really that strong.

Does this have something to do with my blinking charge light when the engine runs or are they two seperate problems? Please, help! :-)

Keep in mind that sometimes new batteries dont have a charge in them. Did you check to see that in fact the battery is in fact good? Many times I have bought batteriees from Sears, only to have to take it back and have them give me a pre-charged battery. What i would do is install the new battery, then test the voltage as someone else cranks it. If the voltage drops considerably during cranking, then the battery is no good.

You can even take the battery to Pep Boys and have it tested

Just an update.... It was not the battery nor the alternator! Kind of what I suspected - it was a break in the connection between the battery and the rest of the electrical parts. One of the two positive cables on the battery was loose... THAT'S IT! Now it starts fine and charges the battery like it should. Thanks for any help anyway! BIMMERS are great! Later
