Burning Rich & Cold Start Stalls
Hi All -
I have a 2001 BMW 330i with a VF Engineering supercharger installed. I've noticed two weird things with the car. First - it seems to be burning rich. I am averaging 80 miles / quarter tank (~20 mpg) - does that seem about right? My mechanic mentioned there was quite a bit of black carbon-looking stuff in the exhaust, giving him the impression it was burning rich. In addition, I also happen to have the ambiguous 15 second oil indicator light (orange) showing up upon start up - every start up. Based on previous posts - I'm guessing that replacing the oil level sensor will fix this issue. Thirdly - I experience the odd "cold weather / cold start" stalls - where the vehicle will start, and upon shifting the car into reverse or drive (car is automatic), the revs drop (to 500 or less) and stutters - sometimes stalling. My best diagnosis so far is worn seals in the double vanos unit. Has anyone looked into this or have replaced these seals? Any help would be greatly appreciated - it's up to my car and me as I live in a town with no BMW specialist. My mechanic does a pretty good job - but isn't a BMW master mechanic by any means. Thanks a lot!

Its hard to judge mileage by 1/4 tank, because the gauge is inaccurate. A 1/4 tank is a little more than a quarter. The 1/2 tank mark is pretty accurate. Calculate your mileage on several full tanks. If you are getting 20+ in mostly city thats pretty good with a supercharger. In my 330i auto I get 22 city and 25hwy(@85), my wife gets about 19 city.
Replace the oil level sensor. I wish there was an easy fix for cold start stalling.
