Window Regulator Replacement

If one of your window regulators broke (popping noise when you try to roll-up/down window followed by an inability to roll-up/down the window following the popping noise). Here is a good link to how to replace your window regulator: http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=104035&page=1&pp=20. My opinion is that this project is a Difficulty Level 3 or 4. If you have the BMW dealership service department do it, it'll typically cost you $300-$400. If you do it yourself, the part will cost you $80-$90.

The procedure to replace your window regulator is similar on the front doors as with the rear doors. Except, you need to make sure that your car is off when you working on the front door window regulators so you don't accidentally deploy the side air bag. If you also have rear door side air bags, you also need to make sure your car is off when working on the rear doors.

When removing your interior door panel, make sure you aware that there is a third door panel screw behind the window control (rear doors) and blank-off cover (front doors) on the upper portion of the door handle. You can use a flathead screwdriver to carefully pry off the window control or blank-off cover. Then use a Torx screwdriver to remove the third door panel screw.

I've got a 325. I'm just waiting for the day when one of my regulators craps out. Nice to see more DIY for the E46.

Does the battery needs to be removed to disable the door air bags or just have the car turn off (key removed) ?
Thanks

It's best to disconnect the battery when you are working around airbags. Ideally, you might want to wait a few hours as well to allow any power in the system to dissipate i.e. capacitors, prevent voltage spikes, etc..
