Is this an M car? Should I buy??

Wondering if you can all help me
The owners friend does not know if its an 1985 or an 1988.

There is no M badging on the speedometer.
It has cloth seats but, there are the three stripes in every seat.
It does have an M powered 6 Engine. I have seen the engine.
Can you note anything based on the pictures?

It has very high KMS
270,000 kms, But the price is right. $1000 cdn ($750 usd ) dollars.
It needs a starter and an alternator.

Just trying to see if
1) its an M
2 its a 5 series with an M engine
3) at those high kms, is it worth cleaning it up for a fun car at the local German auto shows.

Can't tell in the pic, but I thought all E28 M5's were black (at least in the US they were). This one looks gray.
