1993 E34 Problems, running, on-board computer, air fan

Can you give me some advice on the following 3 problems: 1. On an inconsistant basis (although it does it most of the time) the car runs poorly from a stop when accelerating until approximately 2000 rpms, then runs great. 2. The on-board computer read-out does not light up (all the little bulbs on the time, date, mpg, etc. do light up when putting on the lights), but when turning on the lights you can bearly read the time, etc. (the read-outs are correct). Does a bulb just need to be replaced? Who in the US can I send it to? 3. The air blower for the heater/air conditioner will just shut off (not on max.). If I turn it off, it will work again for a while. I changed the blower resistor and it worked fine for about 4 months. Now it is starting again. Do I have a fan blower problem? Should I put on a new fan blower motor?

Javier, Greg Harnden

Problem 1. I'd guess oxygen sensor, clogged air breather, bad wires, bas plugs, dirty injectors....You did not say the model or milage which be a factor. 525i, 530i, and the 540i had very different problems. It could be cylinder wear on the 530i. Ask Javier for the article for ox sensors.

2. You need a manual to fix your dash or another dash. There is a battery in the dash that should have been replaced. If the lights don't get bright your dimming switch is gone.

3. Relates to #2 as I believe you have some corrosion and some tuner spray may cure your switch. I have the same occurance, I removed the temp and fan knobs, removed any llint and dust, sprayed turner spray from Radio Shack. The corrosion creates a great deal of resistance which was fied a little with the relay. All the connections need to be cleaned.

Great , no new engines. I would say look at the obvious, tune up requirements, filters, plugs, etc and thenspend a fortune on an oxygen sensor. The 2.5 does not have the low end power the 3.5 does. You can replace the chip and get almost that much power. The 3.0 and the 4.0 are evenhigher horsepower. The 2.5 has a higher rpm where it tends to make power. I would carefully clean all electrical connections. Did the car sit for awhile?
