Interior Light Problem

I am having a problem with my interior lights. I have owned the car (92 525ia) for about a month and it has had the following problem since purchase.

The interior lights do not come on when the doors are opened. They also do not come on after night driving (headlights on) when the engine is shut off. I am very aware of the 3 switch positions in which the lights operate, so the problem is not me having them switched to "off".

They will come on when: 1. switched to "on", 2. lift up on door handle slightly (not enough to open the door).

When turned on by the handle lift (courtesy lighting) they stay on for 15-20 sec. If I open the door during the "on time" they go off immediately.

I thought maybe they were controled by the LKM but I have removed it and they do the same thing. So I don't think the LKM has any control over the interior lights.

Does anyone know where/how the interior lights are controlled?

TIA

There should be a micro-switch in the doorjamb that controls this. When the door closes, it turns the lights off.

I just love tunner spray, it can fix most anything electrical that does not need to be replaced. If the weather seal in damaged around the door this could be the cause, but both doors would be rare unless your in a very damp climate.

Jared-

I'm not seeing any micro switch in the door typical of other vehicles I do/have own/ed. I'm looking for a pin type switch that gets pushed when the door is shut. Is this what you are talking about? Does the e34 use some sort of magnetic switch that uses the door latch/striker to open/close the circuit.

Last night, 30 feet from my house i went through a gutter (small cement v crossing the street) as I turned onto my street and the interior lights came on. I have the switch in the 'on when a door is open' position. They stayed on when I got out, closed the door, and for about 15 minutes, until the auto 'you left the lights on' feature shut them off. The same thing happend on my way into the office this morning. It's got to be a loose wire or bad contol module. Any ideas?

Darren
