1994 530i and 3.0L V8
I have found a 94 530i for sale. It has 85,000 miles on it a recently rebuilt automatic transmission, still under warranty. Every available option is on the car. I understand this is the first year for the 3.0L V8. Is this a problem motor? Any other things to look for on this car. Over all is this a good year and model for a first time BMW owner?

I too am interested in this. I have read that there was a problem with the plating in the cylinders wearing prematurely.
Thanks

I've never heard of a 3.0 V-8. The 530i has a 3.0 six-cylinder.
The problem you are reffering to affects the 540i where some of them had a cylinder wall plating that reacted to the high sulphur content of US and UK gasoline, causing the plating to break down and eventually cause the motor to lose compression. i had heard that BMW would replce the engines in these cars under pretty tight cicumstances. I dont believe they are still honoring this program thoguh. |

Yes, the 94 530 is the smaller V8.
And, yes, it is one of the engines that has the sulpher problem. If the engine block warranty is still in place, it probably is close to running out (either by time or miles). Which is probably why the owner is looking to sell. You should NEVER buy one of these without having the engine checked for sulpher damage first, by someone who knows what he is doing. Even with that, I personally wouldn't buy a 95 or earlier BMW V8 model. Too much risk for me. Most of the Tech guys at BMWCCA agree. The prices have come down a lot, and I'd look for a post '95 car. But that's just me. |
