cupla 535i questions

Hi all,

I have a 1988 535i (243,900 km) that's been my semi-daily driver for almost 4 years now. Unfortunately, I couldn't find ANY 5-speeds when I was shopping so had to settle for the oft-derided automatic transmission. Still, it's been a pretty good ride overall. I do have a cupla questions regarding the car though, and maybe someone here could help me.

So far (knock on wood) I've had no real trouble with the auto-trans other than the occasional minor glitch when up-shifting, usually when not fully warmed up. I added "LUBEGARD Automatic Transmission Protectant with LXE" soon after I bought the car - my good?/ my bad? I do downshift (4-3, 3-2) quite often, but usually bring the revs up as I do so. Other that not revving the motor while the trans is in neutral or park, is there anything else I should or shouldn't be doing to prolong the tranny's life?

Regarding the HVAC system, the heater fan has all but stopped working completely, yet when I turn on the AC (which doesn't even work) the fan blows like crazy. Are there two fans involved? If so, what's involved in removing and replacing the heater fan...or might it be something else? Here's a long shot: could I replace the heater fan with the AC fan???

My latest little (I hope) problem is that the fuse for the interior lights, the tachometer, the trip computer, and I-don't-know-what-else keeps blowing and I have no idea where to even start looking. Any clues, tips, suggestions...

Also, after reading most of the other posts regarding 535s, it seems I have the opposite problem - my car starts great all winter, but when it's warm/ hot out it takes a lot longer usually and idles even rougher than normal, and normal is pretty rough already. Clues, suggestions... Note: the dist cap & rotor, the idle valve and 2 temp sensors have all been replaced already.

Well, I guess that's enough (plenty/ too much?) for a 1st post.

Oh wait! One more thing... does anybody know of a good independent BMW repair shop in Calgary, Alberta, Canada?

Thanks in advance. Sorry for being long-winded.

Dave54

Ok...great. Thanks Jared. BTW, which of my symptoms is the 7er exhibiting? The fan problems? The fuse problem? The difficult hot starting? All the above?

Also, FWIW, the other thing that I couldn't think of that's on that same fuse is the central locking system.

Good luck!

Fan and fuse problems.

Im leaning towards a faulty rheostat for the fan control. After doing some electrical tests, it seems that there is a short somehwere in the cicuit. I have yet to determine exactly where it is though. This is also affecting the temparture control vents, as it was stuck wide open on hot and constantly blowing. Not very comfortable with a 100+degree summer in Los Angeles...
