AC Compressor
I have a 1999 528i E39 and there is a minor rattle when I start the engine with the AC on. No rattle when it is off. It will rattle after starting when I turn the AC on. So we pretty much figure it is with the AC. Dealer says it is the AC Compressor. The air still works well. My question is are we sure it is the compressor? Is there a way to repair the compressor? Or do we bite the bullet and [purchase a new compressor? Any assistance will be appreciated.

hmm... I would try rtunning a can of A/C oil in there. It might help a bit. Be sure to get 134a oil.

Oil could quiet the compressor down for a bit, but soon it will croak. I bet if you looked underneath the car at the bottom of the compressor, you will see greasy residue from where the compressor has been leaking oil. With dye in the system you should see freon leaking as well. From your description it sounds as if the compressor is on it's last leg. Eventually you will notice the air not cooling as well and gradually get worse. All the while rattling louder and louder. In some cases, they will drop dead without progression. I advise replacing the drier along with the compressor. It's only a matter of time. Good luck!!
