Exclamation E34 trans probs.Car moves, but no pwr, Please HELP!!

I have a 91, 525i. I was sitting still in traffice and all of a sudden I have no power. I step on the gas and the car moves but like the tranny is slipping considerably. Once some momentum is gained it will continue but without power or being able to switch the gears by pressing the gas way down. The LED lit up but I cannot read (display has bad caps I think) But oddly enough the led that shows what gear I am in and the mode I am in has disappeared. Can anyone shed some light on this??? Should I brace myself for a huge bill?? If that's the case, anyone know a good mechanic in West Palm Beach FL? Thank to all who reply! (PS this is my seventh Bimmer, problem or no problem, you can't beat the ride of a BMW!)

I did some more reserch. The display evidently was reading "Trans Program" and it when left for a little while then restarted, all seems fine. Here is the website that had a VERY explanatory article which has a number of inexpensive fixing possibilities. Thanks to the people who helped to create this article!

PS anyone who needs any kind of work done for them, you can get it done your way at your price or less at http://www.Up4Contract.com It is the first ever work auction, contracts are posted with a payout amount and then people bid it down. The site has helped me save incredible amounts of money and when I need extra money I just bid on work I know I can do. I can't believe it took so long to for someone to think of this idea. Hope it helps someone else!
