Check Engine Light On
I have 1995 525i, and the check engine light is on. I took my car to the BMW mechanic and he connected a code reader. He says the control unit is bad, and it needs to be replaced.
The car runs great, but I have to pass the smog check, and with the check engine light on. It will not pass. Mechanic ensure me once the control unit is replaced the light will go off. My question is can the control unit be fix without having to replace it? or do I really have to replace it. Please I need some advice. Thanks. |

Did he give you the error code or is he claiming he cant connect to the ECU?
1995 is OBD-I so I would try to pull the code yourself following this method: http://www.pelicanparts.com/bmw/techarticles/Mult-Code_Reading/Mult-Code_Reading.htm Also, you can go to an autoparts store and they will pull the codes for free.
