BMW Roundel Removal and Replacement of Double Temperature Switch

I'm sharing this little DIY task for those that may need to replace that pesky switch as we go into summer.

Tools you will need:

10 mm socket
22 mm deep socket
10-inch long blade screwdriver or equivalent
Swivel universal for 22 mm socket

Standing in front of the car and looking at engine, the switch is located on the engine head, front right below the fuel injector tube. It’s obscured by breather hose and intake manifold.
  1. Use 10 mm socket to remove the 2 bolts holding cover. Remove cover to allow more light on switch.
  2. Disconnect breather hose and move out of way.
  3. Try gently pulling connector at the end. Do NOT pull the four wires. If it does come straight off, use the screwdriver to ease off. There is a groove feature on
  4. Use the 22 mm socket and swivel to remove the switch. A small amount of coolant will drain from head. There should also be an aluminum crush washer that needs to be replaced. The new switch probably has one already on the male thread.
  5. Use the 22 mm socket and swivel to install the new switch and washer.
  6. Install the connector. It has a polarizing feature on it so it only goes on one way.
  7. Reattach breather hose and cover.
  8. Take a short drive to verify your dash temperature gauge is registering.
