2002 530i strange starter motor problem

Hello everyone,

I ran into a strange starting issue. When I try to start my E39 (185k miles) it just goes "chunk" and does not start or turn over. If you do this several times it will eventually start like normal. New battery, alternator output is good - just happened out of the blue.

Here's the catch - a brand new Bosch starter motor does the same thing. Hi amp draw happened on both.

Anyone run into this?

A follow-up here:

Turns out my head gasket was in the process of being blown. If the car sat I believe a cylinder filled up with water. After several attempts to start it cleared. I had a low coolant level warning eventually plus it threw a 1346 code (Misfire during startup on cyl #3). Just before this I had checked coolant and everything was fine. Now it's obvious - water in the oil.

Bummer
