95 525i Error Code
I have a 1995 525i. It has had two previous owners. I recently read the forum article on errors codes, and followed the procedure for my 525. I received the code 1266 Vanos system. That said I have had a problem getting the car to pass California smog and recently had some hard idle issues. Is this my problem and can it I handled the repair or do I need a Cert BMW mechanic.

Post your smog results HC, CO, NO for both speed ranges.
You may only need to use low octane to pass as well as fresh oil change and new plugs if they aren't no other codes?? OBDI = 1266 VANOS System: Check the wiring or the relay associated with the VANOS system (variable camshaft adjustment). find relay and test it...it may be possible to bypass the relay as a secondary test, though not for use in daily driving. you don't need to pay for the cert guy Jon

Thanks for the input. I think it may be more than the relay. i have a loss of power with a surge feeling at lowed end acceleration. I notice loud valves sounds during warm-up, and recently have had check engine lights during acceleration while driving. the only code I get is 1266 Vanos.
