Cooling issue

I have a new to me 528i that the previous owner stated had a new radiator put in it a couple years ago, but it has been getting hot in the recent past. That said I got a good deal on the car and went to work. After draining the full strength coolant from the entire system, back flushing the radiator and bleeding out the system with fresh coolant the problem persists. The fan clutch appears to be fine, it too is a couple years old, the thermostat seems to be doing its thing, opening and providing heated coolant to the radiator and heater core. Here is the issue: when driving the temp gauge will sit at the 12 o'clock position most of the time, if you pull out to pass someone it will climb to the 1:00 mark or a little higher and settle back down, I have had to use the heat a few times to stop the climbing of the gauge. The previous owner was told he needed a new radiator, what do you think? From research the water pump has a metal impeller (mfr date 10/98) so that should be good. I wonder about the sender for the gauge as well.
PLEASE share your input.
Thanks.

Enjoy the Dream Cruise...

How many miles on the car? Wat plugs are you using, heat rating? How did the flush look, clean and green or ugly?
Could be running lean or timing is advanced a bit but that would be an electronics/motronics issue...

It has 160K on it. I don't keep know what plus are in it, previous owner. The flush looked good, after it diluted down. I did the back flush to see if there was any junk in it but didn't see anything. The check engine light is on, said to be the lean start system, could that be related?

Cooling system

Make sure the system is bled properly. There is a procedure for doing it and it is important. If you don't, air bubbles form in the head and it does not get cooled down, leading to blown head gaskets.

I agree, this sounds like there is an air pocket somewhere in the system. Try bleeding it and see if that helps.

mine did this and had a tiny leak at the base of the expansion tank on the side of the rad just check it, and a little tip, check the rad cap isnt bunged up with crap or damaged, if it doesnt work properly it can cause the same symptoms, to 5 goes to get my 520 running at 12 o clock a nd not to move, mine did the same as yours up until the 5th bleed
