Fuel consuption

My 525i, 1995 runs on 18 miles per gallon. I have done tun-up with filters change and plugs but no difference. The exhaust fumes smell bad with an unburned gas odor. Anyone knows what is possibly wrong?

Could be old oxygen sensors. You need to have the car scanned for codes.

When the O2 sensor wears out, the engine computer makes the car run rich with too much gas. It will reduce fuel mileage, smell bad, and if you run like this long enough, it will ruin the catalytic converter. There is only one sensor and it is located under the car ahead of the catalytic converter. If you are getting a rotten egg smell, chances are you have already damaged the cat. Good preventative maintenance is to replace these every 70-80K miles. At that point, the sensor has already degraded to the point that it affects performance.
