E39 sunroof issue

I own a 2001 530i with a sun/moon roof. My problem is that it doesn't seem to be closing totally. Also, when I push the button for it to close, it catches on the piece of metal that sticks up to deflect the wind, and pulls itself back so as not to damage anything. If I get out of the car, and hold the metal strip down, (and pull my finger out before it pinches it!) then it closes all the way, but still gives me wind noise when I'm in the cabin. Any ideas?

The 3-series of that era had sunroof problems. It's probably the same or at least very similar so check these out.

Thanks for the post. No, that is a different issue. I had that (those issues) with my 3 series as well. This is something different, in that it doesn't seem to have anything to do with the actual mechanism of the sunroof. It just seems to be sort of out of adjustment, if that makes sense.

Have you figured this out? I have same problem

I noticed that you didnt get any responses to your problem. I have the same problem on my car, need to get my finger to push down the metal catching on the glass when it retracts. Any solutions? thanks.

I ended up selling that car, but I solved it by just removing that metal bar if I remember correctly. It is only to make the wind smoother when it's open, and when I took it off, the closing problem was solved!

I'm resurrecting this thread to seek information on my '97 E39 sunroof issue. The sunroof will not tilt up to the vent position. It does slide the interior sun shield back and allow me to manually push it to the trailing edge extended up position. However, it will not remain extended. Is there a part that has broken that i can replace to correct this malfunction?
