front end creaking

I have a 97 528i. recently I noticed when turning the wheel while going slow or parking a very pronounced creaking noise coming from behind the left tire / front end. Originally I thought it was coming from the steering wheel because my windows where usually closed. Now I noticed it's very pronounced at the left front end and resonating into the passenger compartment. This is why I thought it was coming from the steering wheel.

Can anyone help with ideas of what it could be?
