I have a 2007 525i. The engine temp went up, i add water because the coolant was low. shortly after that the heater stopped working. it keeps running hot, unless i let it warm-up with the resevior cap off. now the belt broke. Any suggestion on what could be wrong.

This could be a faulty head gasket. Check operation of the water pump and thermostat. If they are functioning normally, check the head gasket. My preferred way to check it is to check the cooling system for Co2.

If the belt broke, it may have been running stretched to a point where it no longer spins the water pump efficiently, it may have been slipping on the water pump pulley. That may explain the engine running hot.
Mine is a 1998 528i, it has a separate electric pump for the heater. I am not sure yours has that.
