What is this part????
I have recently purchased a rough 86 535i and am trying to fix some of it's many problems. I have found a vacuum line attached to a grey plastic housing hanging down from under my dash. I have no idea where it goes or what it attaches to. there is a Bosch part # 1147 212 017 on it, does any one have any idea of what the heck this goes to, and what it does? inside the plastic housing is styrofoam and what looks like poss. a broken pc board with a capacitor maybee? any idea's ? Thanks,
Andy |

Thi sounds like it could be part of the climate control system.
I checked the part number and it shows no listing, I beieve the part number is incomplete. It's missing one digit. Can you get another number off it? |

Jared, there are no other #'s that I can see, but I will look again more closely. You wouldn't by chance know how to determine which power steering pump is on this model? and if there is a rebuild kit for it, or would I just be better to swap it out?

As for the power steering pump, I'd look under the car and see if there is a manufacturer's casdting on the pump housing. I believe that ZF would be the manufacturer.
As for the unknown part, is there any way you could get a pic of it? That would help me in determining what it is and where it goes. |

Jared. other than the bosch #, below it is the #058 on the opposit side is this info... bmw 64/11 1369828.3 behr 90.942.01.205. thats all. it is grey in color has a vacuum line attached to the back and three wires on one side, green w/yellow stripe, lt. blue, and brown. as far as the p/s pump, no vis #'s at all, however on the gear box is a zf and part # i think. if it is a zf pump would it be poss. to rebuild it or would it be better just to replace it? thanks again, and hope you have a merry Christmas. Andy

Hey, this may sound like a complete rookie question, but after I replaced the injectors, including the cold start pita!, there are some LED lights above my turn signal idicators, that have never been on whatsoever b-4 and all of a sudden I now have 1 yellow and 1 red that are coming on and off for what seems as no reason, what the heck are they for and should they all be working all the time? thanks, Andy

No, not the turn signal idicators, just above them, there looks to be some green, yellow, and red LED's in a staight line just above them, I have no Idea at all what they are. As far as the mystery part goes, who or where would I contact to mabee find out? getting info from the dealership is like pulling teeth, they have been difficult at best when it comes to getting information. I will post a new thread about the LED's and see what comes up. Thanks for all your help. Andy

How would I go about finding out what they mean specifically?

Ok, are these the small red green and yellow lights on the dash?
These are the service interval lights. They are designed to illuminate sequentially until the car hits a sertian mileage, then all the lights come on, It's a visual reminder used to indicate that the car needs service. Last edited by Jared at Pelican Parts; 12-30-2002 at 04:16 PM.. |

Yes, now for the real fun question, why would only two of them come on, and what could poss. cause them to go out? Keep in mind, this car is a wiring nitemare, I honestly think every system in this thing has been hacked on cut up and mickey moused back together, and so the chase is on..... Thanks Andy

We still need to figure out what that part is that started all this trouble.
Can you get a picture of it or a part number? |

if I had any way to get you guys a pic, trust me I would. I do not believe that the part that is dangling from a vac hose under my dash has much to do with the svc lights, but then again would have never guessed that the right rear tail/brake light being loose would cause all my dash lights to go out.... I am about to dig into the dash and try to do something about the rats nest that is under there, is there any special hints or info that I should be aware of when dealing with the electrical on this car? I read somewhere that they are extremely sinsitive to voltage spikes and such, is this fact or fiction? any one got a snorkle?.... Thanks, Andy

And by the way, I used to live in so cal, Anaheim, I really miss the weather, I Have a friend who still lives out there, says it was 70 deg yesterday, and about the same today.... We just got another 4in of snow that was preceded by 1/2 in of ice.... Why did I ever move? Don't ask.... the answer still eludes me....

The small plastic piece dangling down from under the dash is the interior temp sensor for the climate control system. It should be mounted to the under dash panel (the piece that you remove to get under the dash) with a spring clip type device.
The lights you refer to are the service indicator LED's. They are supposed to tell you when to change the oil and have it in for service. They are preety much useless, but as in your case can display in a funny way at times. This is usually caused by the batteries that are located in the instument cluster going bad. Get yourself a copy of the Bently's manual for the e28. It will answer all of these questions for you.

Does this piece have a small yellow piece of plastic on it? If it was a temp sensor, would it be hanging from a vacuum line (like he suggests?)...
