Clicking noise

Started asking for help on this one as a thread to another users question, but the problem I have is driving me mad and I need HELP. My 520i has a loud clicking noise coming from what seems to be the drivers (right hand drive car) side wheel arch. It only happens when the car is in motion and only after reaching a speed of around 40k,s I dont think it can be engine trouble as the car runs and idles fine. The noise has a regular beat to it and seems to relate to each rotation of the wheel, it is more prevalent when driving in a straight line or turning to the left and disapears under braking or decelerating to a speed under 45/50k. It may be a coincidence but I have a brake squeal from this area also. I have taken the wheel off and cleaned away any dust and stones etc. Could it be brake related or cv,s tie rods etc?

Well it cant be the CV's because this car is RWD. this is going to sound strange, but can you phoentically spell what the click sounds like? What year is your car? It could be the driveshaft coupling?

The year of the car is December 93. I only bought it last year but prior to that it was a "one owner" and according to the sevice books it has had all the correct services. It has just reached 160k,s. The only way I can best describe the noise is NOT as a rattle or a grind but more like a loud click like the noise an electric welder makes when starting to do a weld, or a piece of tin stuck to the wheel and as I have said it seems to be in beat with every rotation of the wheel. Hope that makes some sense.

I'm not familiar with these cars yet as I'm a new owner too but have you checked the brake calipers or pads for misalignment? I've had a couple of cars that would click in time with wheel rotation if the pads did not fully retract from the rotor after braking. Applying the brakes makes the noise go away.Coincidentally, one also squealed.

As a suggestion I'd say check the caliper attachments for tightness and remove/reseat the pads, making sure they are lubricated.

I would agree with rick, check the caliper mounting bolts on the back of the hub. Make sure they are torqued down to at least 50 ft/lbs.

Thanks for the help guys,Thought I had it cured the other day as I was told to check my tyers to see if I had a "FLAT SPOT" so I swapped the wheel with the spare. This did cure it for a few days but it has since returned, so I will give the brake caliper a close check.

Now it sounds more like an alignment problem. Check the ball joints for wear, as well as the control arm mounts and upper strut mounts.

Thought it might have something to do with alignment, but I am experiencing no wheel wobble or pulling to any side BUT I will check it out as the noise is so annoying!!!!!

Try pulling on the tire while the car is parked, if there is any free play, it could be a bearing
