I recently had the oil changed in my '88 735i but the status bar under the speedometer is still telling me that I need service. Is there a way to reset that light without visiting a BMW dealer? Any assistance is appreciated. Thank you.

But to test if the batteries need replaced try the following.
With the ignition switch at (position two) and the engine not running, grounding pin seven #7 of the diagnostic connector to pin one #1 for approximately three (3) seconds will reset the oil service lights. Grounding pin seven #7 to pin one #1 for approximately twelve (12) seconds will do an inspection service reset. ![]() http://www.unofficialbmw.com/images/reset1.gif 1. Ground 4. Temperature sensor 7. Reset 8. TDC sensor yellow 9. TDC sensor shield 10.TDC sensor black 11.Start signal 12.Alternator charging excitation voltage 13.Ignition coil 14.Alternator charging supply current 15.Oxygen sensor output to test with. It will signal an oil change need between 5k and 7k depending on your indicated speed since the last reset. It will signal stealer inspections at all the predesignated miles. http://www.eskimo.com/~dalus/bmw/e36/electrical/e36_reset_service_lights.html |

I dont reccommend this method of resetting the computer, because it can send spikes through the wiring and fry your ecu. There have been a couple of people I know personally who have done this. Use the tool, dont take a chance. The tool is $49.95, a new ecu is over $500.

The SI board has nothing to do with the ECU.
I am ASE certified and may suggest your experience to recommend a difference to my recommendation is kind of strange. Please concider posting the e-mail address of either owner that had an issue. Later, |

KC,
I post this warning because I have seen this failure before. The Si Board and the ECU are not directly related, however thats not what we are talking about here. When you try to ground out the pins on the diagnostic connector, it can send voltage spikes through the car, which can damage the ECU. If this isnt the case, why have I sold two new ECU's to customers who tried to reset the indicator this way? I would like to state for the record that Pelican does NOT reccommend you reset the indicator in this way. ALWAYS use the tool. |
