60,000 mile service
I'm approaching 60,000 miles on my 2000 740IL and wondering what service needs to be done and if it needs to be done by a dealer or if I can do some myself. I plan on changing the oil with synthetic oil but beyond that I don't know what else needs to be done.
I also need a new battery but I understand that it is a dealer only item. I called and was quoted a price of $190.00. Does anyone know of a cheaper one? Thanks |

IN ORDER TO GAIN AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE SHOULD YOU DECIDE TO SELL THE CAR, I WOULD HAVE A DEALER SERVICE THE CAR AS FAR AS THE BATTERY I AM SURE THEIR IS MORE THAN ONE SUPPLIER.

Navybob, you don't need to go to a dealer. The 60k service is what they refer to as an Inspection II, at some places this can cost as much as 450.00 to 600.00. and its all in the labor. Call your local dealer as what they charge. And ask for a copy of the check list of what goes on in this Insp II. It will be as follows....
AIR FILTER OIL FILTER POLLEN FILTERS (2) ALL FLUIDS AND OILS (EXCPT TRANS & COOLANT) COOLANT FLUSH IS ADDITIONAL CHARGE... This plus full inspection of all moving parts i.e.... brakes belts hoses suspension lights wipers... this inspection is when the dealer as you traped to tell you all that is wrong with your car and upsell you on repairs...its what we used to call GRAVY TIME!!! ask me how i know...15 years in the service and parts dept at Bmw dealers....thats how i know.. ofcourse if your car is a beater and you are intrested in totaly repairing and perfecting your car with deep pockets this is the best way to go. The parts are not that much to purchase outside the dealer, this to i also know.....

It's also quite easy to do all this work yourself. There's not much to the filter replacemnt/flush.

There are a lot of independent shops out there that will do a fine job on an Inspection-II and will charge you at the low end of the spectrum. The local dealer quoted me $575 for Inspection-II on my '93 E32. Two miles away one of the independents with a good reputation did the job for $435. Same for brake work. The dealer quoted me $700 for a complete job on either front or back including pads, rotors etc. I got both fronts and rears done at the independent shop for around $800 (brakes on E32's are EXPENSIVE!)
